The podium of the Piazza della Signore (Plaza of the Nobles), where pronouncements were read to the citizens of the medieval city-state of Florence, was gradually overtaken by its statuary, including Giambologna's "Rape of the Sabine Women" with its "elaborate serpentine composition" meant to be viewed from all sides.
