The great Namib Sand Sea, a 500-foot deep blanket of ancient iron-stained sand that covers the coastal plain of Namibia between Walvis Bay and Luederitz, is penetrated for almost 50 miles by the dead-end Sossus River, in a dry channel that is cleared out once a century by torrential floods. Along the sides of the valley tower some of the world's tallest dunes.
